Find out how Shoaib, RateMyPlacement's Marketing Assistant, is finding his experience so far as a Placement student!
Earlier this year, I arrived in London to begin my position as a Marketing Assistant at RMP Enterprise. Having just finished my second year as a Geography student at Durham University, I decided that it was time for me to tackle unfamiliar territory. I had been toying with the idea of a career in Marketing for a while, but with graduate jobs at their most competitive yet, I knew I needed industry experience to compete in what is a very crowded market.
After moving 306km and pushing pause on University life, I was set to delve into the world of work. And four months later, I can confidently say that Marketing is the career for me. If you’re thinking of breaking into the Marketing industry, here’s why you definitely should!
- A Placement in Marketing is Dynamic!
If I’ve learned anything about Marketing, it’s that two days are never the same. A Marketing role delicately balances the creative and professional spheres, making the job both fun and practical.
I’ve had the chance to work with numerous industry experts. From creative designers to content executives, my role as a Marketing placement student allows me to delve into different teams and pick up invaluable skills, such as Copywriting, Graphic Design and Social Media Marketing. When I’m not building RateMyPlacement’s online presence, you can catch me ‘modelling’ in content photoshoots, engaging with students at university events and delivering employability presentations at conferences across the UK. The role really is incredibly varied!
Whether it’s technical skills, such as navigating Marketing software, including Dotdigital, Wordpress or Adobe Photoshop, or softer skills such as ability to work under pressure, presenting or effective communication, the skills I’ve picked up will prove exceptionally useful.
- A Placement in Marketing is Fun!
Follow any Marketing agency on Instagram and you’ll see that a job in Marketing is great fun. And yes, whilst marketeers have an eye for making something fairly dull seem exciting, I assure you that what you see on the RateMyPlacement instagram, is what you really get. After all, you can’t engage an audience whilst been stuck at your desk, writing email after email 24/7.
At RateMyPlacement, it’s fair to say that we work hard, but play hard too. With regular social events (my highlight has been climbing the O2), office drinks on a Friday and perks such as free breakfast and flexible working hours - my job really doesn’t feel like your typical 9-5.
My favourite aspect of my Marketing placement is the real team ethos that shines through everything we do. Marketing is built through innovative ideas and here at RateMyPlacement, I’ve loved being able to bounce my ideas off others to really develop great campaigns. The team culture and community spirit ensures that those you work with become great friends too!
- A Placement in Marketing is Useful!
As a Geography student, I came into my placement role with little prior experience of the Marketing sector. But, what I’ve picked up in the last four months is more than most Marketing students pick up in a lecture theatre. The practical and hands-on capacity of a placement means that I’m gaining some quality industry experience that will really make my CV standout.
Even if you didn’t want to pursue a Marketing career full-time, the communication skills you pick up, the keen eye for detail you develop and the ability to effectively promote a brand are strongly desired by any employer. Industry experience is always fantastic, but the breadth of opportunity within a Marketing placement stretches even further.
