Big things come in small packages – why I love working for an SME

By Ellie Mosley on Wed 10 September 2014 in Placement Blog

If you have read any blogs by other newbie placement students, I’m sure you will have heard again and again how quickly the time flies.

Now I’d love to be controversial and buck the trend and say that’s a load of rubbish, but if I did I would be lying. It’s odd to think that a mere 5 weeks ago, I was a gangly ball of nerves questioning how I was going to deal with the pre 10am starts, the drastic drop in holidays and the thought of making my own packed lunch. But now I couldn’t imagine not working. It’s fair to say I’m really loving my placement. Everyday I’m constantly surprised at how much responsibility I’m given.

My job title is Client Service Assistant; I feel so grown up even typing that let alone seeing it on a business card. My role is slightly different to the other positions. I support the account management team at ProspectSoft who are responsible for looking after all of our lovely customers. The team is great fun; I sometimes find myself questioning if I’ve spent more time laughing than actually doing any work. No two days are the same, but then again I have only been at my desk for 10 days.

My first job in the morning is the infamous brew run, they operate a good system here which means once you have made someone a cuppa they should return the favour, it means it’s not just the placements that make the drinks but the Directors too. I then have a plethora of tasks to do. I am the first port of call for customers, sometimes it’s easy and I just have to transfer them to their account manager other times I am responsible for resolving their usage queries. The other account managers also keep me busy throughout the day generating quotes, confirming orders, making sure that client projects are running smoothly and just generally keeping customers happy.

In my first 5 short weeks, here, I have hands down learnt more than I have my whole time at Uni. I can’t express how pleased I am that I have found myself at an SME, the jobs I have been given have been really engaging, the team is constantly on hand to point me in the right direction and I truly feel like I am having an impact on the business. For anyone looking at placement opportunities, don’t dismiss the small ones just because they are small, the opportunity to leave a legacy is truly incredible.

Here’s to the next 5 weeks!
